Health issues: Daily cola ‘raises cancer risk’ because of caramel coloring

A new study has shown that drinking soda such as cola that contains caramel color raises cancer risk because of its caramel coloring. It is found on the research that4-Mel – 4-methylimidazole is the chemical which gives cola that interesting caramel color is a possibly carcinogen. For restrict use of 4-Mel there are not any federal regulations. But more than a half of American people – according to the report – between age six to sixty four drink enough soda on a regular basis to raise their cancer risk.

Although there are not any federal regulations on how much of the chemical manufacturers can be put in beverages, California does require companies to include a cancer warning label if the drink contains more than twenty nine micrograms in a twelve ounce can or bottle.

The average person age 6 to 64 drank around 2 and a half cans of cola 2 day. Around 1/3 of children between ages 3 and 5 drank 2/3 of a can every day. Also, people between age sixteen and forty four were the most common cola drinkers, and they consume around 3 cans per day.

During this analysis, the researchers concluded that in the next seventy years, there can be around 6,000 incidences of cancer that are related directly to cola consumption.

But with cracking down on the soft drink industry, it won’t eliminate the chemical from the American diet. Sadly, dark-colored carbonated beverages aren’t the only source of 4-Mel. This chemical is used in barbecue and soy sauce as well, and also in pancake syrup and some soups.

Caramel color is one of the most widely used and oldest food colorings. This color is a water soluble food coloring that is made by heat treatment of carbohydrates in the presence of alkalis, acids, or salts and that process is called caramelization. This caramel color is broadly approved for use in beverages and foods internationally but application and use level restrictions are different in each country. For aesthetic purposes some manufactures add the food coloring.

By the state of the researchers, they have analyzed consumption of all sodas, and categorized soda into 5 equally selected categories: 1) diet-cola, 2) cola, 3) pepper cola, 4) root beer, and 5) other types of cola beverage. So, the amount of the population that consumes every type of soft beverage varied with colas as the most popular while the pepper colas and root beer are the least popular. Regular daily consumptions of any soda were between 560 and 1,080 milliliters by 17- to 21-year-olds and between 458 and 865 milliliters by 46- to 65-year-olds.

Soft drink consumers are exposed to an unnecessary and avoidable cancer risk from an ingredient that is being added to these beverages just for artistic purposes. You should know that this needless exposure poses is a threat to public health and it also raises questions about the continued use of caramel coloring in soda.
